Accredited Insurance Examiner (AIE)
An AIE is awarded to insurance regulatory professionals who have been extensively trained in one of two primary fields of insurance regulation, Property and Casualty or Life and Health. To earn an AIE, an applicant must successfully complete the required course work under a single education path and meet the following employment and experience requirements:
- Experience Requirements:
- AIE applicants must have two years of fulltime regulatory work experience.
- Employment Requirements:
- AIE applicants spend 75% or more of his/her time working for an insurance regulatory agency (whether as an employee or a contractor).
Property-Casualty Educational Path
To earn an AIE via the Property-Casualty Educational Path, an applicant must successfully pass eight (8) of the following courses and meet the employment and experience requirements listed above.

Courses may be taken in any order. Regulators having a minimum of two years of fulltime regulatory experience and who have obtained a CPCU designation will be granted the AIE designation without the need for further course work.
Life-Health Educational Path
To earn an AIE via the Life-Health Educational Path, an applicant must successfully pass the following four (4) required core courses, plus an additional four (4) courses from one of three options (Life, Health or Information Systems) and meet the employment and experience requirements listed above.

Optional Courses
In addition to the required courses, an applicant must complete four additional courses from any one of the following three options. Courses from one option cannot be mixed with another option to complete the required course work to earn an AIE under the Life-Health Educational Path.

Required and optional courses may be taken in any order. Regulators having a minimum of two years of fulltime regulatory experience and who have obtained a CLU or FLMI designation will be granted the AIE designation without the need for further course work.
Certified Insurance Examiner (CIE)
A CIE is awarded to insurance regulatory professionals who have attained the AIE in one field and cross-trained in the other field. In order to earn a CIE, applicants must have previously earned (or meet the educational requirements to earn an AIE) under either the Property-Casualty Educational Path or a Life-Health Educational Path, complete the required course work following the same path taken to earn the AIE and meet the following employment and experience requirements:

- CIE applicants spend 75% or more of his/her time working for an insurance regulatory agency (whether as an employee or a contractor).
Property-Casualty Educational Path
Applicants that earned an AIE under the Property-Casualty Educational Path must successfully complete any four of the following courses.

Course may be taken in any order.
Course Waivers
Students who have obtained a law degree (JD) may obtain a written waiver for a course required to attain a CLU, FLMI or CPCU from the American College, the Life Office Management Association or the American Institute for CPCU (Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter). Where such a course waived by one of these organizations is in the curriculum required for the AIE or for the CIE designation, IRES will recognize such a waiver and grant credit for completion of that course. The waiver must be in writing on the letterhead of the organization granting the waiver. It should be attached to the AIE application with a cover letter requesting to waiver.
In the event that a student obtains such a waiver, IRES will grant no more than one course waiver to a student working toward the AIE or CIE designation. Such a waiver may apply only to attaining an AIE or a CIE, but not for both.
